medals and honnors 2008

At the time of the 2005 grape harvest, 31 924 hectares (78,966 acres) of vines came under the appellation of A.O.C. Champagne, spread over five different administrative areas or départements (principally the Marne plus the Aube, Aisne, Haute-Marne and Seine et Marne), covering more than 319 villages or communes.
Only 17 of these villages qualify for the Appellation of "Grand Cru" and 41 for that of "Premier Cru".

The grapes harvested in 2005 represented the equivalent of 346 million bottles. By common agreement, the champagne inter-professional organisation set aside a part of this harvest as reserve wine, to be used in years to come. A few figures for average yield per hectare 12,992 kilos in 2005, 3,680 in 1978 and 100 in 1910 (two very bad years!).

As of 31st December 2005, there were 20 010 growers in the Champagne wine-producing region. This very large number of people declaring harvests bears witness to just how fragmented ownership of this vineyard area is.
